The village of Curemonte dates back to
the 11th century.
Despite its numerous attractions (3 Chateaux, 3 churches and a
market hall), it remains very much a working village, with a boulangerie,
post office, bar/tabac and three restaurants. There is also a local
farmers market once a week in the summer months.
It was to Curemonte that the writer Colette fled when the Germans
marched into Paris in 1940, calling it her "verdant tomb",
imprisoned as she was without petrol to travel around. Petrol probably
wasn't the only fuel she was without, as rumour has it that much
of the oak panelling of the chateau ended up in her fireplace!
