St. Robert, classified as a plus
beaux village de France (one of six in the Correze), was founded
in 1122. Like so many towns in South West France, it was the founding
of a Benedictine Abbey that put it on the map. The 12thC Romanesque
church was fortified in the 14thC.
Part of the Vicomtes de Turenne's vast holdings, the town
thrived through the centuries and many fine buildings were erected
in the mellow honey coloured stone of Perigord, just across the
Correze border.
The Fountain of St. Maurice is credited with miraculous cures for
sick children and a pilgrimage takes place every year on 15th August.
