The many pepper-pot towers, turrets and belltowers of Uzerche seen
from across the river Vézère, is a sight to behold
on a fine day.
Once through the 14th C gate (Port Bécharie) into
it's mediaeval heart, the town keeps its promise and is a fine example
of France of a bygone era. As you pass through the gate check out
the motto in Uzerche's coat of arms - Non Polluta. So named
by Charles V as Uzerche the Virgin, as it was never taken by an
enemy, including the Moors, who laid siege to it for seven years.
Come 1940 and it was a different story when it was occupied by
the German Army. Uzerche suffered badly at the hands of the SS 'Das
Reich' division in June 1944.
Tarry a while at the café in Place de la Liberation
where you will also find a very well stocked Tourist Office, housed
in a fine old merchants house.
