Belvès sits proudly on a hilltop, with spectacular
views across the Dordogne countryside.
The Place des Armes is the mediaeval heart of this
Plus Beaux
Village, with its 15c covered market and old shops. Check
out the chain attached to a pillar and ponder how mediaeval petty
thieves were treated to the lash or pilloried for the amusement
of more upright citizens.
Gothic and Renaissance buildings... a Dominican monastery
complete with octagonal clock tower... an old coaching inn... cafés
bars and restaurants... Belvès is well worth the effort.
Wander through the narrow streets and if you find a bakery , grab
a fresh croissant and have a coffee in the café opposite.
The café patron will not mind... he doesn't sell croissants
as long as the bakery opposite does not sell coffee. La vie en
France en Belves. Marvellous.
