Beynac enjoys one of those magical Dordogne settings that strikes
instant love into the heart of many. It is the sort of image of
this lovely region, that stays in the mind long after returning
home. The sort of place that inspires many to leave England and
move to France for good. Following in the footsteps of all those
English holed up in Castelnaud, who
fought so hard to get Beynac back from the French in the Hundred
Years War. A very practical feature of the castle kitchen is the
chute, down which the French could poor their unwanted frites
oil onto the attacking English!
There are truly magnificent views of the Dordogne River and, pretty
much on every hill, another castle or chateaux to wonder at - mighty
Castelnaud and pretty Marqueyssac being just two.
Richard the Lionheart not only slept here, he actually stormed
it and captured it... Simon de Montfort thought he'd destroyed it
forever... milord Beynac rebuilt it ... more recently, the French
have restored most of it. Enjoy.
