Like all bastide
towns, we know exactly when Eymet on the river Dropt was founded
- 28th June 1270 to be precise.
Eymet has the obligatory arcaded market square and
a fine example it is too, with its restored 15thC & 16thC golden
stone and timber framed houses. The centrepiece of of the square
is a charming 17thC fountain (which our photographer managed to
miss!) and the several surrounding restaurants, cafés and
bars will conspire against your moving on quickly. Particularly
on a Thursday, when the market comes to town.
Check out the remains of Chateau Eymet (a stone's
throw - or, rather, arrow-flight from the square) with its imposing
3-storey 13thC square keep - "English Tower". A charming
house is concealed by the barbican - it now houses a museum and
is not, alas, for sale. Mind you, judging from the number of estate
agents in Eymet, there must be plenty of houses around that
are.
