Limeuil, like many of Les
Plus Beaux Villages de France, enjoys a spectacular hillside
position overlooking the river. What makes Limeuil a bit more special
than others of these special French villages, is that it enjoys
river views of not one, but two rivers. The Dordogne itself and
the River Vezere. And to prove it, they built bridges over them
both. At right angles to each other. Well it is one bridge, really...
the Pont Coude (coude, meaning elbow).
The riverside church, built by the English, is dedicated to Thomas
à Becket, whilst the main part of the village tumbles down
the hill from the old 'Richard the Lionheart' castle at the top.
When you see the views, it is easy to see why the English built
it here. And why the Legion d'Etranger doctor built his retirement
home there, after his wars.
When you visit, park you car at the bottom and climb up there
first. Then you will appreciate all the more, the cold beer or crisp
glass of Bergerac blanc waiting for you at the café on the
quayside below.
