Montfort... another of those splendid chateaux that the Dordogne
does so well and in such magnificent abundance.
Montfort survives today as a picturesque whimsy of a serious castle,
clinging dramatically to the cliffside above a great horseshoe bend
of the river Dordogne.
Mind you, we that can visit it today are lucky it is still here,
as it was knocked about a bit over the centuries. Yes, Simon de
Montfort wrecked it. Rebuilt by the mighty lords of Turenne, it
was captured by the English during the 100 Years War but they lost
it. The Wars of the Religion saw it much attacked by the Catholic
armies trying to winkle out the incumbent Protestants. Not sure
what happened there during the revolution, but something bad that
the French tend not to talk nor write about, no doubt!
