Betaille is on the Dordogne river valley route from Martel
to St. Céré.
As its name implies, the scene of much fighting as the gauls struggled
to contain the advancing legions of Julius Caesar.
Eventually routed by the Romans, the remnants of the Gaul army
were said to have holed up in the hill fort of Puy d'Issolud, just
down the road near Vayrac.
The Romans promptly founded the strategic town of Uxellodonum
to keep the locals subdued... the present day site of Vayrac.
Today Betaille is a collection of stone houses together with a
couple of impressive Manoirs. It also boasts a railway station (Brive
to Aurillac via St. Martel Denis)
Check out the red brick church, the walnut millstones and the restaurant.
