Cahors is the capital of the Lot département, and
nestles in an isthmus formed by a loop of the River Lot. Virtually
surrounded by river and, thus, easily defended, its place in history
was virtually guaranteed from its earliest incarnation as a Gallo
Roman trade centre.
In a city rich in history, probably the single most recognisable
site would be the magnificent 14th Century fortified Valentré
bridge, uniquely, with three towers. Classed as a major World Heritage
site by Unesco, this masterpiece of a bridge is, literally, the
gateway to discovering mediaeval Cahors. Palaces, cathedral, churches,
merchants houses... historical monuments galore, all vie for your
attention in this great city.
Make no mistake though... Cahors is a living, lively city. Try
not to leave the Lot without seeing Cahors nor tasting the deep,
ruby red full bodied Cahors wine, which has AOCstatus and 'Grand
Crus' stature.
