Overheard in a pavement café in Gourdon...
1st Brit.... You know, the English built Gourdon.
... well, to be fair, they really only improved the Roman hill fort
to make it into a Crusader Templar stonghold. (long
pause)
Yep, the English built Gourdon. Again, to be fair,
they really only improved upon the Templar stronghold... had a hundred
years of war to do it... Agincourt and all that. (Long
pause to order more chilled white wine)
The French destroyed Gourdon, you know. Or, to be
fair, they only really tore down the ramparts after the English
had gone. Which made way for this circular road that surrounds the
ancient centre of the town instead. Which is why there's room for
all these cafés, bars and restaurants to put out tables and
chairs like this. (pauses for breath). Yep, the English
built Gourdon... but the French made it, I suppose, you've
got to give them that.
(2nd Brit, after a long pause for wine): It's nice
to be back.
