Another living "gem" of a town, Martel
(of the Seven Towers) has always been pretty important around these
parts.
Founded in 1219 by the Viscounts of Turenne, who owned pretty much
everything around here. They held their High Court in the 13thC
Hôtel de la Raymondie and the town was a seat of a Royal Court
of Appeal until 1790.
Having fallen out with his father, Henry II, Henry 'Short Coat',
holed up in Martel after leading his English soldiers in the sacking
of Rocamadour. It was here in Martel
he died "full of remorse" in 1183.
Today, wandering around the town, you can enjoy the legacy of all
this historical turmoil, with fine old buildings, narrow mediaeval
streets and ancient townhouses... the (modern) hanging merchant's
signs are a joy. Check out the stained glass windows of the 13th/14thC
St. Maur.
Tarry at one of the restaurant/bars and then buy a house from Eric,
the charming Frenchman who runs the estate agency!
