Apparently, it is now official. He came,
he saw and he conquered and, so doing, Julius Caesar and his Roman
Legions ousted the Gauls as the custodians of France right here at
Vayrac, on the Roman road from Martel to
St Céré.
Vayrac is now officially the site of Roman Uxellodunum... the last
Gallic stronghold to withstand the might of Rome in its military
heyday. At least the nearby site of Puy d'Issolud, the Celtic
hill fort, is... the last stand, so to speak.
In reality, there was probably a running "mother of all battles"
right down this part of the Dordogne valley, as the disciplined
legions and cavalry of Rome scattered the Gauls before them. In
fact, just up the road is a town called Betaille
(Battle). We would tell you more, but the museum of Roman Uxellodunum
in Vayrac always seems to be closed when we go there.
