A gabarre is river boat, designed for cargo carrying.
Hence the tag... the HGV's of their day. In their 19th century
heyday, just about everything that needed to be moved from
growing region to major markets (particularly wood) was transported
by these flat bottomed boats... these Caminarde Gabares.
The Dordogne and Lot rivers became the motorways of the Lot,
region of France until the coming of the railways, which put
the gabares pretty much out of business. But not quite.
Today, on many rivers (particularly the Dordogne), you can
enjoy river cruises by gabare... a great way to see this beautiful
country and its spectacular riverside chateaux and castles.
